100$ 64-bit 3ghz ppc cross compiler for the Z2 (Installing PS3 Linux and Cross Compiling Env from Thumbdrive)
I've been seeing a lot of PS3s come up on craigslist with broken optical drives, usually around 100$. Figuring this was a great way to free up my quadcore from mundane cross-compiling duty, I set about purchasing one and setting up the Z2 cross compiling environment. It took a bit of doing, but it works. Here's a step by step guide for setting yours up.
NES emulator running fullspeed in fluxbox on the Zipit Z2
Oh and Java is working now too. Lots of packages compiling now. Don't try installing GDM, can get you into a nasty crash loop.
HUGE UPDATE – Fluxbox WM and full windowed multitasking working on the Zipit Z2
So I got fluxbox compiled. This is a real game changer, as it's fully configurable via a keys file. You can get my current .fluxbox/keys file here. I've sent some of the window manager commands like maximize and fullscreen to alt-m alt-c etc. I've posted a video of playing scummvm and running other apps simultaneously, below. Exciting times!
wireless+x image for zipit z2
As requested here it is, for legal reasons you'll still need to add your own wireless as described here. For those interested in building it themselves,
- bitbake busybox
- open your /zipit2/recipes/wireless+x/wirleess+x.bb and remove opentyrian (why is this in there??)
- bitbake wireless+x
ScummVM and Monkey Island working on Zipit Z2
New Zipit Update! I've gotten ScummVM working with the new kernel. Xserver-kdrive too, so our memory usage is down again.

Zipit Z2 New Kernel Update!
The short story: The flash worked and I've got everything working that worked before. The long story?

Don’t Panic! The REAL HitchHikers Guide is here TODAY
As it turns out, with a little bit of effort you can put together a cheap (50$), handheld, wireless, graphical wikipedia browser ala the HitchHiker's Guide.
Prerequisites:
Install Linux (wifi), Xfbdev (x11) and Dillo (browser) on your Zipit Z2 as described here.
DilloRC:
Here's the custom part. After launching dillo for the first time, you'll have a ~/dillo/dillorc file in your home directory. Open that up, and customize the layout to your liking. Personally, I just enable "fullscreen mode" at startup and it hides all the buttons. Then head on down to the "search url" and enter in:
"http://google.com/search?btnI=1&q=en.wikipedia.org +%s"
This tells dillo to use google's "I'm feeling lucky" search on wikipedia for the search term. This allows for instant wikipedia browsing over wireless ala the hitchhiker's guide. All for under 50$ nice!
