  4. Aww dang but it was a cool contest

  5. I was wondering which of us would quip about the name thing first.

  6. Congrats to all you winners hope you enjoy your prizes :)

  7. Hey Everyone! All the packages for Hackaway 2009 have shipped out! Thanks for all the support and well wishes. I encourage everybody to add me on facebook/linkedin/myspace etc etc and continue the spirit of community we’ve got going. I’m also very excited at the hacking projects coming up!

  8. Hey Anok,

The wikireader looks interesting, but lacks any communications medium other than usb. I’d be curious to hear about it if you end up picking one up. The format is open spec, so you should be able to easily make your own entries or port other wikis to the device. Good Luck!

  9. so have u picked up the Zone GAMEing system At Cvs
yet what have u thought about it

  10. Didn’t see one at my local CVS, did see a “family gaming system” but didn’t look as appealing. I’ll keep my eye out.

  11. Hey Hunter
Do you have a facebook group? If so whats the URL

    -Adam

  12. Hey Adam,

No group. I’m on facebook (www.facebook.com/huntergdavis), but do not have a “group” or app or anything like that. You (or anyone else on the site) is welcome to add me.

  13. A++++++ Super Fast Shipping. Would accept free gadgets again in the future.

  14. Hahhaha lol. Glad to hear you got it in ok. I still have 2 overseas packages left to ship out tomorrow, then everyone should have their packages within a week.

  15. Hi there,
I finally got the IM-Me today. I’ll tell you if I can make anything interesting with it, ASAP, as I’m now into another project (which in fact is my “Undergraduate Thesis Project”).

    So, thanks a lot, Hunter.

  16. Hey Guillermo,

Glad to hear that it got to Spain before the holiday season ramped up! Good luck on your thesis project! Hopefully the IM-ME will be of some use to you. Happy Hacking Holidays!

  17. Seems that I arrived late for the hackaway, congratulations to the winners. What I really wanted is your zipit z2 linux image. I download one from hunterdavis.com/zipit.tgz but it seems lacking a lot of packages, no dpkg so I’ll have to manually install dpkg.deb :( just to get things started

  18. Hey Esteban,

You can get the newest debian images from the sourceforge page, they include apt-get and dpkg. The one I posted is based on the older bitbaked userland. Good luck!

  19. Sorry for my last message lack of background.

I’ve been playing with the debian image for a while and you already gave me some precious advice (http://hunterdavis.com/archives/125)

What I really mean is, is it possible to mix binaries from the bitbacked userland and the debian image? Can I add working bitbake userland’s binaries to the debian image, for example hwclock isn’t working in debian but do work in bitbake.

Also, what about the games included in your image, prboom and mario just to name the ones I’ve checked, is there any special requirement to run them? They just hang the zipit, or maybe I didn’t wait long enough. Can they also run on the debian image?

In zipit’s debian remote access with ssh and vnc is great but bash and X server are not a good enough user interface given the limited keyboard and small display.
What the zipit OS is lacking is a customized X server with just a set of applications (with big buttons and keyboard shortcuts access) like: battery status, wireless network finder (like zipit’s original software), clock, calendar, address/phone/email book, notepad, email, browser, personal finance, mp3 player, image viewer, video player, games.

All these apps are already written what I need is to put them together in a image and maybe customize their GUIs. Do I need to set up a whole bitbake dev environment to accomplish it? Is it possible to get a copy of your dev env?
Did you base your dev env on this openzipit.org/Z2Develop/ ?

  20. Hey Esteban,

    Now I gotcha.

    1. Yes, you should be able to mix bitbaked binaries with the debian kernel without too much issue. You’ll just need to make sure the libraries required for the bitbake are also installed on the debian system (like sdl, sdl-image, alsa etc)

    2. I didn’t test all the games… so no guarantees they run at all :) You should be able to install prboom from apt-get without issue, not sure about the mario one.

    3. I use the standard dev environment availabe at the sourceforge page (quite similar to the openzipit one). You should be able to accomplish your goals however by just installing the starndard applications on the debian image and customizing your window manager theme settings. For instance I use icewm, with a double bottom bar that auto-hides. I also have cpu and memory graphs on the bottom bar, as well as the start menu, battery indicator (not accurate), etc. You can probably do it all better using conky and a well crafted .conkyrc file. That would also take less memory. I think it should be doable though without too much trouble,

    Good Luck!
